In 2005, the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions became the first environmental-policy-centered Institute with a Duke University affiliation. Since then, the Nicholas Institute has grown into a major nonpartisan participant in key debates surrounding climate change, the economics of limiting carbon pollution, oceans governance and coastal management, emerging environmental markets and freshwater concerns at home and abroad.

Though the Nicholas Institute doesn’t take sides, it strives to help decision makers in business, industry, government and the nonprofit sector better anticipate their choices by providing a sound understanding of these, and many of the world’s other, complex environmental issues. It is one of seven Duke University Institutes founded to “put knowledge in the service of society.”
